A Child’s Backyard Garden Of Poems
About Animals, Birds And Things
H. D. Johns is a practicing
psychologist in Maryland. He is widely known for
comparing dogs and people as in “What I Need to Know
about Living I Learned from My Dogs” which he
authored in 1998. He is also quite an authority on
wildlife. In this small book, written as he observed
from a quiet place in his backyard garden, complete
with trees, a pond with fish, bird feeders and lots
of cover for squirrels, rabbits and other small
intelligent creatures, he describes with a touch of
humor the attributes and antics of the things he
lives with in his garden.
Written for children of all ages,
this book introduces some infrequently used words
that H.D. defines at the end of each poem. Softbound,
includes illustrations for each poem.

Book Excerpt
The Comic Nuthatch
A Nuthatch performs its crazy shtick,
Climbs head-first down a tree.
It's the only bird that does that trick.
A comic thing to see.
Other birds are neat and sweet,
But they climb like you and I do.
They keep their heads above their feet,
And never cut a dido!
This Nuthatch bird is not a clown,
For our entertainment fare;
Perhaps it's found being upside down,
Catches insects unaware.
NEW WORDS
Shtick: Showy behavior
Dido: A prank, or antic
